Frequently Asked Questions

Many chemicals commonly used in various industries are non-flammable but require bulk storage for distribution and use. These lockers have a built-in secondary containment sump that is required for many chemicals to prevent pollution into ground water or are detrimental to humans and wildlife even if they are not flammable.

If you use chemicals stored in 55-gallon drum without flammable or combustible risks, these lockers are designed for easy, secure storage outside or inside your facility. Sized for 2 drums up to 16 drum sizes, they allow easy and organized access to your stock, with the security of a tested and code-compliant secondary containment sump built right in.

Chemical storage buildings manufactured by U.S. Chemical Storage are designed to get your operation compliant. Contact one of our technical sales engineers to learn how we can find the best solution for your compliance needs.

You will also want to learn more about specific chemical storage requirements in your specific area by contacting your local “Authority Having Jurisdiction” (AHJ) who could be a local fire marshal, a municipal code official, or a city environmental department.

No. Safety Cabinets for chemicals are cabinets made from an 18-gauge steel used to store smaller volumes of flammable liquids, corrosives, or other hazmat materials. Flammable Safety Cabinets are allowed ONLY for use inside an existing building. While there are some variations, a general rule is that a flammable safety cabinet should be considered for small “Maximum Allowable Quantities” inside an existing building. Depending on the specific class of the chemical, that may be a gallon or two, or up to 110 gallons.

The definition of a “sump” is a pit or reservoir providing containment for spilled liquids. U.S. Chemical Storage offers leak-proof spill containment sumps in each standard model. All our sumps are tested for leaks for a 24-hour period prior to finishing.

The sump is then covered by a steel or fiberglass floor grating and can even be equipped with a resistant plastic sump liner to protect against corrosive chemical accidental spills. The size of the sump is dictated by code based on the volume of liquid being stored within the building.

If your quantity is for more than 110 gallons in barrels or totes, a locker may be the right choice. If you’re quantity is between 2 drums and 16 drums, a locker may be the right choice.
