Across the U.S. and globally, a surge in AI-driven data center construction is underway, creating what many experts are calling one of the largest infrastructure buildouts in history.<\/p><p>In a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfpa.org\/en\/news-blogs-and-articles\/nfpa-journal\/2026\/02\/11\/ai-data-center-boom-outpacing-safety\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-uw-rm-brl=\"PR\" data-uw-original-href=\"https:\/\/www.nfpa.org\/en\/news-blogs-and-articles\/nfpa-journal\/2026\/02\/11\/ai-data-center-boom-outpacing-safety\" aria-label=\"recent NFPA interview - open in a new tab\" data-uw-rm-ext-link=\"\">recent NFPA interview<\/a>, it was stated that in 2025 alone, U.S. companies spent an estimated $600 billion to build new data centers\u2014twice the cost of the <u>entire<\/u> U.S. interstate highway system.<\/p><p data-start=\"1114\" data-end=\"1211\">But with this growth comes a critical question: is safety evolving fast enough to keep pace?<\/p><h3 data-section-id=\"cjblj2\" data-start=\"1213\" data-end=\"1255\">A New Kind of Infrastructure Challenge<\/h3><p data-start=\"1257\" data-end=\"1565\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfpa.org\/en\/news-blogs-and-articles\/nfpa-journal\/2026\/02\/11\/ai-data-center-boom-outpacing-safety\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-uw-rm-brl=\"PR\" data-uw-original-href=\"https:\/\/www.nfpa.org\/en\/news-blogs-and-articles\/nfpa-journal\/2026\/02\/11\/ai-data-center-boom-outpacing-safety\" aria-label=\"The NFPA article - open in a new tab\" data-uw-rm-ext-link=\"\">The NFPA article<\/a>\u00a0stated that more than <b>2,000 <\/b>data centers will be built around the globe by 2030. These are not just construction projects. AI data centers are fundamentally different from traditional commercial building projects due to the infrastructure they demand. They require significantly more power, generate far more heat, and rely on increasingly complex systems to operate. In many cases, these facilities are being designed and built while the underlying technology is still rapidly evolving and regulations are struggling to keep pace.<\/p><p data-start=\"1567\" data-end=\"1944\">This creates a unique challenge for safety professionals, engineers, and Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs), who are tasked with evaluating risks that don\u2019t yet have well-established standards or precedents.
