Toluene is commonly found in metal cleaners, adhesives, varnishes, paints and paint thinners and toluene storage is often a hazmat concern in operations that use this chemical.\r\n\r\nToluene is a clear, colorless liquid and carries a smell similar to that of paint thinner. It dissolves other substances easily and can evaporate quickly.\r\n<h3>Hazards<\/h3>\r\nToluene storage is highly flammable and has the ability to catch fire if exposed to heat, sparks or flames. According to NFPA 704, toluene risks include:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Flammability: 3<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Health: 2<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Reactivity: &#8212;<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Special: &#8212;<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nExposure to toluene can affect color vision, hearing, and high concentrations of exposure can lead to tiredness, difficulty sleeping, numbness in limbs, and damage to reproductive systems.\r\n\r\nSafety practices outlined below are solely used as safety guidelines when handling or storing toluene. In order to gain full compliance and safety measures, contact your local authorities or regional safety representative for a comprehensive approach for safety equipment and handling procedures.\r\n<h3>Toluene Safety \u2013 Handling &amp; Storage<\/h3>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Use PPE, including gloves, safety goggles, face shield, coveralls and boots depending on the type of handling task.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Practice good housekeeping when storing, loading and transferring inventory.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Dispose of toluene-soaked material in approved <a title=\"Approved Waste Cans\" href=\"https:\/\/www.justrite.com\/safety-cans-and-containers\/waste-disposal-safety-containers\">waste cans<\/a>.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Wash hands after handling toluene and similar substances.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><a title=\"Safety Containers\" href=\"https:\/\/www.justrite.com\/news\/justrites-guide-to-safe-grounding-and-bonding-practices\/\">Ground and bond containers<\/a> while dispensing and filling materials.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Keep containers closed when not in use.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Properly seal drums before and after use.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Ensure labels are readable.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Monitor data of employee exposure.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3>Best Practices in Toluene Storage<\/h3>\r\nHandling and transporting empty drums requires care equal to or greater than drums with full chemical contents.
